Blood Diamond

This weekend I had been to 'Blood diamond'.The fact that it has been running for six weeks now in Mumbai's multiplexes should tell you a bit about the movie.A good one in my opinion. The movie starts with a native family getting torn apart and ends with their reunion...Sounding cliched? You won't feel it when you watch the movie.

Some good performance there from all the leads, amazing background music, good cinematography and a good background setting for the story.

But I found dialogues the best part of the movie.Some hard hitting ones keeps you rivetted to the screen.A particular scene wherein the female lead accuses Leonardo Di Caprio of being a mercenary , he defends himself saying ' We are partners in crime.Its girls in America who want a fairy tale wedding with a diamond ring. They want cheap diamonds and we are helping them get it' hits your senses like a hammer. How often do we knowingly endanger others?? Are you not in the category who pays a paltry bribe to the RTO and gets a driving License without knowing how to drive?? Or is it uncommon for you to call up your cable operator asking him to telecast a newly released movie without worrying about what problems he might face?? Or is it not your nature to carry fireworks in trains during Diwali even if you know that its illegal to do so?? Or don't you buy pirated CD s and books on the pavements just days after their release? Then good. Very good. The dialogue won't niggle you long after the movie is finished.

The story essentially talks about how the militants use their natural resources to fund their rebellion and in the process,destroy millions of lives.Its not a story of the past. It s happening today in Congo and Angola...

The world might stop buying conflict diamonds as suggested by the movie..But a few disturbing questions arise.What's the solution for the already poverty stricken nations of Africa if the world refuses to buy their produce? How will it help these conflict zones come back to normal if the world stops buying their diamonds?? Will not poverty fuel a revolution akin to the French Revolution?? How long can UNO sustain the continent??How will the child soldiers be rehabilitated? And by whom?

The voice of the third world is heard..but the rest of the world does not seem to have replies for the questions asked..
